Re: My First SOTA Activations
Nice write-up, and good job making a double-activation in the cold! When I discovered four new parks had been added to my state's POTA roster, I went to visit them one day -- in the midst of a cold snap (temp's in the teens) with a foot of snow on the ground. Turned out none of the Wildlife Manageme...

Whew, those are some endurance-level CW activations to finish out that kilo! Nice work, Brian!

Re: QRPing - My first 5 day POTA streak
Awesome article, Dave! You should definitely offer it up for QRPer.com. Congrat's on the streak. QRP/CW and POTA are definitely arenas for challenging oneself and finding joy in meeting those self-tailored challenges! A week of lunchtime activations is a serious push, and Friday definitely added dra...

Re: CW-friendly winter gloves for SOTA paddle
Did not see/hear the episode, but I'll offer an opinion anyway. My favorite gloves are "convertible" gloves/mittens. They're like those gloves that only cover half your fingers, with a fold-over pocket to keep you finger tips all warm together. I've discovered mittens are warmer tha...

Re: Telescopic antenna
Fascinating QRZ thread ! A couple years ago I bought an inexpensive, generic 17' / 5.6m telescoping antenna from an online auction site. It looked like exactly what those guys are talking about, but without the threaded top section and with a nice connector on the bottom. I spent quite a while windi...

Re: Question on RBN and POTA
Jeffry, Like you and Brian, I too have had occasions when setting an activation failed to get me me spotted with CW even though the RBN picked me up. I remember that lasting for several days, maybe even a week or two once. Eventually I chalked it up to challenges between the pota & rbn sites. Li...

Re: Field Report: Pacific Island Adventure
Although the KX3 is compact, I think I will bring one of my QRP Labs QMX rigs on subsequent trips instead, which are smaller and lighter than the KX3. The downside is I’d need resonant antennas for the QMX rigs as I prefer not to bring along another piece of gear for tuning. That said, one signific...

Re: QRP coming out of 25 sun spot cycle
I'm a fairly new operator as well (this time around). I'll note that amateur radio has an extensive legacy (decades!) of QRP operators/enthusiasts. QRP activity will not fade away with the changing sun cycle. It was QRP builders/operators that first interested me in radio 27 years ago. I'll also not...

Re: My first QRP POTA Activation was a Failure!
Brian, Great job getting out there! Another NJ POTA buddy and I have an agreement that there's no such thing as a failed activation. If you went out to a park and set up, that was a successful activation! The only question is whether it was a mini- (less than 10 QSO's) or full (10 or more QSO's) act...

Re: Throw Lines and trees
Brian, I'll echo Brian's comments: I look for a branch of the height I want without a lot of obstructions between it and me. And I definitely avoid evergreens: they're too thick and things get stuck. I prefer trees that are tall enough and old enough to have shed most of their lower branches. I foll...
